PolyPort.Chat Support
Answers to common questions, and how to reach us.
Getting started
What is PolyPort?
PolyPort translates conversations as they happen. Speak in your own language and the other person reads and hears it in theirs, while you are still talking. It works on one shared phone, or on two phones paired together.
Do I need an account?
No. You can start translating straight away. Create an account (with Apple, Google or email) when you want to keep your contacts, conversation history and vocabulary, and use them on other devices.
Which languages are supported?
English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Swedish, Icelandic, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese and Vietnamese (Northern and Southern). Choose the two languages in the language bar at the top of the translator.
Does PolyPort work offline?
No. Speech recognition and translation run on our servers, so you need a mobile data or Wi-Fi connection.
Translating
The microphone isn't working.
- iPhone: Settings > PolyPort > Microphone must be on. In Safari: Settings > Apps > Safari > Microphone, or tap "aA" in the address bar > Website Settings.
- Android: Settings > Apps > PolyPort (or Chrome) > Permissions > Microphone.
- Make sure no other app (a call, a video meeting) is using the microphone.
Then close PolyPort completely and open it again.
I can't hear the spoken translation.
Check the volume and, on iPhone, the silent switch / Action button. When two phones are paired, the translation is spoken on the listener's phone, not on the phone of the person who spoke.
The translation cut off or missed words.
Hold the phone about 20–30 cm from the speaker, speak in full sentences and pause briefly at the end. In a noisy place, turn on VoiceFence (see below).
How do I start a new conversation?
Tap the New session button to the left of the language bar. The previous conversation is kept in your history if you are signed in.
Two phones
How do I pair two phones?
On your phone, tap the QR-code button at the top and let the other person scan the code with their camera. They can also tap the key button ("Join with a code") and type the code shown under the QR code. Each person then speaks and reads in their own language on their own phone.
Does the other person need to install PolyPort?
No. Scanning the code opens the conversation in their browser. They can install the app later if they like.
How do I end the pairing?
Tap Exit (or "End pairing" at the top). Both phones return to their own translator.
Contacts and messages
How do I add a contact?
Open the menu > Contacts > Invite, and share your invite link, or add someone you have been paired with. Once they accept, they appear in your contact list.
What is "Knock"?
In a chat with a contact, tap Knock and their phone rings. If they answer, you are straight into live translation. If they don't, your words are kept in the chat for them to read and reply to later.
Where are my old conversations?
Open the menu > History. Chats with contacts are under Recents.
Learning
How do I save words to learn?
Tap any line in a conversation, choose "Add vocabulary", and tap a word or swipe across several words. Tap Learn, then "Translate & Add". The phrase is saved with its translation.
How do flashcards work?
Open the menu > Vocabulary > Practice. Each card is read aloud; tap it to see the translation, then rate how well you knew it (Again, Good or Easy). Words come back on a spaced-repetition schedule, just before you would forget them.
Which languages can I learn?
Set the languages you are learning in your Profile. Saved words are sorted by language.
VoiceFence
What are VoiceFence and a VoiceKey?
Your VoiceKey is a private digital signature of how you sound, made by reading a short passage once. With VoiceFence on, PolyPort filters the microphone around your voice, so nearby conversations, children and TV don't get mixed into your translation.
How do I set it up?
Open the menu > Voice Fence and follow the steps to create your VoiceKey. Then turn VoiceFence on before you speak.
Account and privacy
How do I delete my account?
Sign in, open your Profile and tap "Delete account". This permanently deletes your account, conversations, recordings, contacts, vocabulary and VoiceKey. It cannot be undone. You can also email privacy@polyport.chat.
Is my conversation private?
Your audio and text are sent to our servers and AI providers only to transcribe, translate and speak them. See our Privacy Policy.
